A couple weeks ago I was assigned to cover the last night of Club Manhattan here in Salt Lake off of Main Street and 400 So. before it closed for several weeks for a complete remodel. The club has been mainly known for it's hip-hop scene recently and it was fitting that was the night it closed on.
The owner of the club, which has been open since World War II, wants to try to re-capture some it's past luster.
I turned in a decent shoot that I felt OK about, but it was these two frames that were not included in that edit that I really liked.
In both cases the frames were omitted because I knew there was no-way our presses could make a four color separation of these colors. (CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) presses hate rich reds and certain blues).
The basement club was very dark with rich red walls and tungsten yellow lights on the walls. It was the type of place you go to enjoy the music and social scene but not be seen.
I knew I needed images that could reproduce so I shot with a fill flash for most of the assignment. But I saw the girl above sitting with a group of her friends in the corner.
She was smoking and each time she inhaled off the cigarette the bright cherry illuminated her face.
To me it was a simple shot that stood out for it's uncomplicated nature and told the story of the place.
Being a former smoker, I understood the sense of satisfaction of the drink with friends and a pack of smokes for the conversation.
She was smoking KOOLs.
